about

Day + Night was the lines community remix project (or LCRP) for the spring equinox of 2019. The goal of LCRP is to celebrate collaboration and the creation of art between members of the community. Each LCRP offers a new method of collaboration and creative focus.

For Day + Night, participants were asked to submit a field recording, taken either during the day or night. They were then asked to create a piece of original music utilizing the recording, as well as another member’s submitted sample (recorded during the opposing time to the one they recorded). There were no specific directives to follow a particular genre or utilize a specific set of tools—rather, the only guidelines were to use the two samples in combination, and in the words of the community member who defined the project guidelines, Marc Weidenbaum (disquiet), the goal was thinking “in terms of balance, about forces that keep each other in check, about halves that complete a whole”.

There are a number of interesting ways in which the members of the community took to this challenge. As you listen, I’d encourage you to explore the ways in which certain sounds perform a call and response (either across the stereo, frequency or transient spectrum), how particular sound sources and spaces morph into others, and the way the tonalities of “day” and “night” move about (both in time and out of time).

If you are interested in learning more about how a particular track came to be, please feel free to strike up a conversation in the thread for this release. And for future LCRPs (which happen seasonally around the equinoxes and solstices), participation is open to all.
